OPUS Foundation sponsors $20,000 in scholarships

Phoenix Union High School Students Win Scholarships

Sponsored by  Opus Foundation

Since 2001, Diversity Leadership Alliance (DLA) has been working to transform the culture of Arizona and cultivate an inclusive community. Founded by a small group of local community and corporate leaders, DLA is one of the premiere Diversity Education organizations in the country, recognized and highly regarded by internationally known diversity thought leaders. Operating as a 501c3, DLA offers a range of strategic learning and engagement opportunities for business and community leaders.

Diversity Leadership Alliance provides thought provoking Diversity training through its monthly workshops, leadership guidance through its Executive Forums and continued development of Youth Leaders through its Youth Leadership Academy. In addition, annually we present a Diversity Conference and Diversity Awards Luncheon honoring individuals and Corporations that are transforming the landscape of Diversity in Arizona.

In 2008, Diversity Leadership Alliance formed the Youth Leadership Academy with the goal of cultivating and developing future leaders from diverse backgrounds. Selected students are from a number of Phoenix area high schools and are Diversity conscious with a strong desire to take on a leadership role in their schools and community. The DLA Youth Leadership Academy is designed to assist students with attending College and pursuing Higher Education as well as transitioning from school to work. The Academy also provides them with tools and resources to help build leadership skills. The DLA Youth Leadership Academy is currently Co-chaired by DLA Board Members Dominic Bartola, Community Advancement Officer of Valley of the Sun United Way and Lee Barnett, Engineering Director at American Express.  Mr. Barnett is a founding member of the DLA youth program and both are long time advocates and supporters of DLA.

This year, we had the esteemed pleasure of receiving a substantial foundation grant for our Youth Leadership Academy and due to the generous support of the OPUS Foundation, were able to grant over $20,000 in Scholarships in 2016.  The OPUS Foundation supports projects and programs that make our communities better places to live, work and raise families.  Their grants are geared toward non-profit organizations in the areas of early childhood education, youth development, workforce development and community revitalization.   A total of 16 Phoenix Union High School Students won Scholarships ranging from $500 - $3,000. Student scholars represented nine PUHSD schools: Alhambra, Trevor Browne, Franklin, Metro Tech, Central, Maryvale, Camelback, South Mountain and North High School. We are proud of the amazing work of the Scholarship recipients and look forward to what they will do to help create a world where everyone feels valued and empowered!
